Andrew Weiss
Andrew Weiss is Ween's longtime friend, producer, and former bassist. Dean Ween has called him their "mentor and big brother".[1]
In addition to production, engineering and bass, Weiss has also been credited with synthesizer, percussion, drums, strings,[2] keyboards[2][3] and sound effects.[3]
Career[edit | edit source]
Before starting his relationship with Ween, Weiss played bass in the new wave band Regressive Aid and post-hardcore band the Rollins Band.
Bird o' Pray Records and the true beginning of Ween[edit | edit source]
In 1985, Weiss co-founded Bird o' Pray Records with Jeff Rusnak, initially to release experimental collaborations with friends. Deaner, being an ardent fan of the label and its releases, sent Rusnak a tape "every week" until Rusnak invited him to their apartment.[4] Weiss' first production credit for the band would be The Crucial Squeegie Lip[5] (compiled from tapes Rusnak had instructed Deaner to bring over[4]).
Becoming the bassist[edit | edit source]
While Weiss had contributed several bass parts to Ween's studio albums since GodWeenSatan: The Oneness, from October 30th 1993 to June 16th 1995, Weiss doubled as live bassist for Ween, touring with the group and being credited as a proper member on Chocolate and Cheese. He was replaced by Matt Kohut for the Country Tour, who himself would be replaced by current bassist Dave Dreiwitz, a decision Weiss was reportedly very unhappy with and would cause his relationship with the band to sour until around 2002.[1]
Weiss would ultimately produce and/or mix almost all of Ween's studio material, with the exceptions being 12 Golden Country Greats (produced by Ben Vaughn) and White Pepper (produced by Chris Shaw). He is not known to have worked with the band since 2007's La Cucaracha, though he would go on to mix "Doo Doo Chasers" off The Deaner Album by the Dean Ween Group.
